Unit 51 Task 2 – Digital Copyright & Permissions
What is copyright and what is its relevance to digital images?
Fontsquirrel.com - Each font has an row of symbols indicating what typical uses we think it allows for free. Please read the license though on any font you plan to use just to make sure. The symbols look like this: ZYMm. If the symbol is dark, then we think it can be used legally, if it is light then we think it can't. Keep in mind that we may have missed something, so if you REALLY like a font, read the license for yourself. If you aren't sure, contact the designer and ask.

In the UK, copyright is an automatic right given to the creators of original works giving these creators exclusive rights to control copying, if the owner allows people to use there material the creators are entitled to receive royalties from the person using the material. Copyright and moral rights protect human innovation, creation and invention from being stolen from the original owner.Like property, IPR can be sold, bought, hired and passed on. The Patent Office has responsibility for managing how IPRs are administered in the UK. In the UK, copyright protection is only given to certain classes of work, these must exist in material form as ideas are not given protection. This means, for example, that while an illustrator may have an idea for a drawing, it is only given protection when the idea has been drawn out rather than just an idea.
Copyright legislation
The Copyright law in the UK is based upon a number of pieces of legislation, case law, directives, treaties and conventions, as well as interpretation. The Copyright Designs and Patent Act 1988 was the first revision of the Copyright Laws in the UK for 32 years and came into effect in August 1989.
Duration of copyright
Under the present legislation, each classification for copyright has a fixed term for which copyright will last. For literary and artistic works, if the creator is known.the general rule is that copyright lasts for 70 years from the end of the year that the creator died. If the creator is anonymous then the rule of 70 years applies from the end of the year it was published. However and photograph made in the UK or by a UK citizen since August 1989 will be in copyright for the life of the photographer plus 70 years.

To plan a photoshoot for my DPS by researching images and evaluating the photo shoot for the front cover
1. How could you have taken better photos for your front cover?
To have taken better photos for my front cover I could have used a better camera. By using a better camera the photos would have looked more professional and would have looked less pixelated. By the images being more pixelated it allows me to make the picture bigger with out the image distorting which is what I need for a DPS.
2.Which made up act with feature in your DPS?
NWS the fictional group I used for my front cover.
3.Who will model and why?
Roman, Gyles and Sof as they are who I have made up to be member of NWS. I chose these people to be my models for NWS as they are black and fit in with the hip hop scene.
4.Which setting in Brighton could you use and why?
I could use the Level skate park as the environment is very hip hop. I think the area is very hip hop as its quite run down, has lots of graffiti and fits in with the typical ghetto hip hop look.

To consider what a the purpose of a DPS is and the key features with in them as an article
What is a DPS?
- DPS is short for double page spread
- 2 facing pages of a magazine where the textural material starts on the left meets in the middle and continues onto the right hand side.
All topics of DPSs in this edition of XXL:
- "#Twerkit" - XXL examines the dance craze sweeping the nation with YouTube sensation Caramel kitten.
- "Everything I Am" - This DPS is about drake it says " Drake's on top. he's been there for a while and he doesn't t seem to be going anywhere, Haters can hate, but it wont matter"
- "Editorial" - About XXL 150th published issue featuring French Montana.
- "Marked for death" Article about 50 cent.
Analysing a DPS about 50 Cent Called "Marked For Death"
- The headline is "Marked for death" This shows to me that 50 cent is not a very loved man in the hip hop industry and has lots of enemies from his previous and present life. It later says in the article "altercation with such formidable figure as Wu-Tang Clan's Ghostface Killah and numerous death threats".
- The main message in this article is telling us how they think 50 cent has the potential to become the biggest name in hip hop if he doesn't get his head blown off first.
- The first line is "50 Cent has bullet wounds".This line is very dramatic and is not something you expect to see normally in a magazine about a rapper. Therefore as a result of this it makes they reader curious to how 50 Cent got the bullet wounds and how he managed to survive.
- I think about 1/3 of the article are quotes, some example of these are "My advance from Columbia was $65,000 but I went back to selling crack" also "I've been in some situations where I've don't bad shit. I've shot people."
